Happy LGBTQ+ Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️. Let’s have a look at some great LGBTQ+ British podcasts and what they are covering this month.

Homo Sapiens looks at how schools should teach and support LGBT+ pupils. They also aired a special episode made by the pupils of Hill Crest Primary, talking about what Pride means to them and their teachers. The Iris Prize Podcast, which celebrates the best in LGBTQ+ filmmaking, has launched a new series discussing representation and authentic casting. Outcast UK looks at the decision by the US shopping chain Target to move their Pride merchandise to less visible locations within their stores. Meanwhile, still state-side, James and Dan from A Gay and a Non Gay interviewed Pennsylvania State Representative Malcom Kenyatta about being black and gay and running for office

What The Trans?! has been looking at how the United Nations have been concerned about the treatment of trans people within the UK. Suzi Ruffell’s Out has interviews with the actor Ben Alridge and the drag queen and comedian Jonny Woo. And Queer Spaces: Behind the Scene recently did a behind-the-scenes trip at the UK’s first LGBTQ+ museum at King’s Cross in London.

Do also listen to some of the LGBTQ+ themed podcasts we have featured in this newsletter in recent weeks too. There’s Black and Gay, Back in the Day which amplifies Black LGBTQIA+ history through the decades and Queer Roots and Routes (“We are queer. We are migrants or descended from migrants. And we want to tell our stories.”)

Awesome AstronomyA podcast that looks at the world of astronomy, with a focus in making the subject as accessible as possible to those who aren’t too well versed with the subject. It’s a joy to hear people talk about the subject in such layman’s terms.

Presented by Jen Millard, Paul Hill and Ralph Wilkins, each episode looks at the latest discoveries and conversations about space, plus interesting things you can see with a telescope from your own back garden (if you have one.) Here’s hoping for clear skies.

Brydon & – The actor Rob Brydon has just started a new interview series featuring guests such as Julia Davis, Ben Elton and Dame Harriet Walker. As you’d expect with Brydon, long winded meandering chats is a format that he relishes in.

The first episode of the series features Steve Coogan (who of course stars alongside Brydon in Michael Winterbottom’s series The Trip.)  You can access episodes early with a Wondery+ subscription.

People Who Knew MeA huge trend in podcasting right now are stories about people who have scammed or lied to others, followed by facing the consequences of their own actions. This new BBC Sounds audio drama, made by the same team behind the Apple TV+ series Bad Sisters, is one of the most compelling.

This fictional drama is about Connie Prynne, a woman who faked her own death in the aftermath of 9/11 in order to start a new life on the other side of America. It is only after a cancer diagnosis that she realises that she has to come clean.

This well paced series is voiced by Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and the drama also features Hugh Laurie (House). There are two episodes a week, each episode only lasting 15 minutes a piece, so it is easy to get sucked into.

Call Me DisabledA new podcast that explores life with a disabled identity, hosted by the broadcaster Poppy Field.

“Since my childhood, I’ve had a rollercoaster of experiences with my disabled identity. Living with chronic illness, chronic pain, neurodivergency, and in particular, inaccessibility. I know how complicated our relationship with disability can be.”

In each episode she speaks about issues that those with a disabled identity may experience, from body image, to gaining independence, to being represented as  ‘inspiration porn.’ It’s an educational and informative listen to anyone.

Thank you as always for reading (and listening).

We’ll be back next Sunday with another podcast newsletter.
