There have been many podcasts covering the sad news of The Queen’s death.

Newscast have been releasing daily episodes featuring the latest tributes and reactions. Meanwhile Maitlis, Sopel and Goodall on The News Agents did a special episode discussing the ascension of King Charles III and how the Royal Family will look and feel different in the years to come.

“It’s surprising how often we use this phrase ‘end of an era’ to talk about really insubstantial, insignificant things,” said Maitlis. “This moment is the end of an actual era. It’s the age of the Elizabethan age. The reign of Queen Elizabeth II. And suddenly it feels enormous. She has been a monarch of stability and continuity in all our lives. And she is probably the most famous woman in the world.”

If you are looking for podcasts that look back at the life of HM The Queen, Short History Of… released a two-part episode earlier in the year looking back at the events that have shaped her life and how British society changed under her reign and in Dan Snow’s History Hit he looks at her early life.

In other news… The Mid•Point with Gabby Logan, a podcast where the sports broadcaster talks with a guest about the unexpected joys and benefits getting older can bring, had a special episode where Gabby spoke to her husband Kenny Logan.

In February this year Kenny learnt that he had prostate cancer, the most popular cancer for males in the UK. There’s currently 52,000 new cases in the UK every year (that’s more than 100 a day.) In the episode Gabby speaks to Declan Cahill, Kenny’s consultant, who talked about common misconceptions about prostate cancer (fact: symptoms are not usually that obvious until a late stage, so it is always worth testing.) And as this month is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, listeners are encouraged to check your risk by heading to the Prostate Cancer UK website and you can find out more about a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test on the NHS website.

NOTABLE NAMES ON PODCASTS THIS WEEK

If you have listened to a great guest on a podcast, let us know by filling in this form and it might get featured in an upcoming newsletter.

Here are our podcast picks for the week ahead

If you want your podcast featured, or you have a great recommendation, all you need to do is fill in this simple form and might get featured in a future newsletter.

Wrighty’s House – A Spotify Original, Ian Wright’s podcast has been a fantastic listen for the way that it manages to weave together the latest football and sport headlines but also providing in-depth conversations that come on his or his guest’s head. It feels so effortless. A lot of podcasts try very hard to recreate the magic that happens here.

A recent episode featuring Wright features fascinating discussion on the retirement, career and legacy of Serena Williams and how she has inspired a whole generation: “She defied everything. She defied them all.”

Crosshairs – A new true crime podcasts looking at shocking assassinations attempts through history and in particular, how their success or failure changed the course of history. The first episode looks at at the murder of John Lennon outside of his residence in New York City in 1980.

It is a well told and well researched story, with no actors and minimal sound effects. Narrator Jonathan Guy Lewis seamlessly flicks between the timelines of both Lennon and his killer Mark David Chapman in the days leading up to his murder, which makes you wonder how things and the path of history could have ended very differently.
